Surrogacy

When you seek treatment at Wilcox Fertility, we aim to make every option, possibility and avenue available to you.  California is known as a surrogacy-friendly state, which means they allow and support both compensated and compassionate surrogacy agreements.  Dr. Wilcox and your clinical team will help walk you through the fertility treatment process as we work towards one goal: to expand your family.

A surrogate is either someone you may know or is someone you have an agreement with who is not genetically related to the baby, carries the embryo or donor embryo to term, and gives birth to your baby.

There are several reasons why some may want to consider using a gestational carrier:

Medical Issue Impacting the Uterus: The intended mother may not have a uterus or she has a medical condition that has impacted her ability to carry a pregnancy.

General Medical Condition: While certain medical conditions do not directly affect a woman’s fertility, they may impact her overall health, her ability to carry a pregnancy or may somehow affect the fetus in some way. If the intended mother has had a history of cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, or severe diabetes, these may be conditions that can make pregnancy a life-threatening concern for both the mother and child.

Same-Sex Male Couples: Gay couples, most commonly men, will often pursue building their family with the help of an egg donor and a surrogate.

When using a surrogate, it’s very similar to the IVF process. In this case however, the embryos created would be transferred into the gestational carrier. You can read more about IVF by visiting our “In Vitro Fertilization” Page.

Dr. Wilcox can also walk you through options such as genetic testing of embryos, donor eggs, donor sperm and more should any of these avenues need to be explored. We are here to answer all of your questions and provide you with every resource so you can make the best decisions for you and your future family.
