What is your favorite patient success story?

“I have too many to count as I love all my patients!

One of my favorite memories is from a patient who lives 8,000 miles away. She had been through many failed IVF cycles with her local doctor. Dr. Wilcox recommended egg donation and surrogacy. At that time, she was not emotionally ready, and we tried an IVF cycle and an embryo transfer, without success.

The next cycle, we used an egg donor and transferred to surrogate, and the outcome was a positive pregnancy! It’s amazing how a simple phone call saying, “Congratulations” changed their entire world! It turned out to be twin pregnancy! This was in 2011. We actually still keep in touch!”

What is your favorite patient success story?

“My favorite patient success story comes from a couple in California. They needed a surrogate, but also needed to create viable embryos for a future transfer.  Unfortunately, the odds were against her as she had low ovarian reserve. She persevered and was very determined to make it happen for her and her husband.  After multiple cycles they succeeded in creating two normal embryos. She was then matched with a surrogate who got pregnant on the very first attempt. This couple now has a beautiful baby boy and on their 2nd surrogacy cycle using their remaining embryo. Throughout her time with us, she always let us know how thankful she was to have our support during this very emotional process. Even when a cycle did not have the outcome she was hoping for, she would still come in and express her faith in our ability to help her with the dream of having her family. She’s my favorite success story because even with all the adversity that was put in her path, she trusted our team and allowed us to do what was necessary to be successful on her journey to parenthood.”

What is your favorite patient success story?

“I had a patient who had a history of recurrent miscarriage. She did not have a problem getting pregnant, but had problems retaining the pregnancy to full term. After 2 IVF cycles of embryo accumulation, we referred her to a recurrent miscarriage specialist to co-manage her embryo transfer cycle, but even after extensive treatment we were not able to help her retain her pregnancies. We then discussed moving forward to using gestational surrogacy.

The journey with a gestational surrogate also had bumps in the road, but we were finally able to succeed on the 4th embryo transfer attempt. This patient has since had a second child via GC, and I am very honored to have been a part of this turbulent, emotional, yet rewarding and touching journey every step of the way. We like to say that the IVF journey usually takes some patience, and as evidenced here, as long as we “hang in there,” there will be a reward at the end.”

What is your favorite patient success story?

“My favorite patient success story is of a patient who became pregnant after several attempts but who never lost hope.

After unsuccessful rounds of IUI’s, egg retrievals and failed FET’s, this patient never failed to have a positive outlook despite the numerous negative pregnancy reports.

It is truly heartbreaking when we have to deliver bad news to patients, but she has shown me how to be strong and hopeful. Because of her positive attitude she as helped me grow as a nurse, as a coordinator and as an individual. We come into this line of work to help our patients grow their families, but this patient has given me so much more than she could ever imagine.”

What is your favorite patient success story?

“All of them! It’s such a wonderful feeling knowing we had a part in each person’s journey.”

Why did you choose to work in the fertility field and what do you like best about your position?

“I chose the fertility field because it is another avenue where I knew I could help people, especially an important one as having babies. Helping people throughout an already emotional journey is nothing to be taken lightly, so when they’re dreams of becoming pregnant comes to life, seeing the joy on their faces is the best part of my job.”

What is your favorite patient success story?

“A former patient and her husband came to visit bringing their new baby and wanted me to meet their bundle of joy.  During our conversation, she had mentioned that when they came for their first consultation with Dr. Wilcox and met me for the first time, they felt at home.  She said they felt at ease and knew from the start that they were in good hands.  They knew it was perfect timing.  They lived quite a ways away in Bakersfield but were willing to drive to Pasadena for treatment.

This couple had been trying for a few years.  She had low egg reserve and her husband had sperm issues.  They went through an IVF cycle and had one normal embryo.  One chance to get pregnant.  Dr. Wilcox did the transfer and according to them, on the day of transfer, Dr. Wilcox’ last words with them before he left the room was “you will have your baby”. And sure enough, 12 days later the blood test results came back positive.  They now have a baby boy and their family is complete.”

What is your favorite patient success story?

I don’t have a favorite patient story, but the favorite part about my job is the consults we have with our incoming patients. There are a lot of ups and downs in fertility. We watch our patients go through the emotional fertility journey, and empathize with all the different emotions; the fertility excursion is a tough one. During our consults, we meet with potential patients to gather medical information, discuss treatments, plan out their fertility goals, and answer any questions our patients may have. We outline every step of the treatment cycle and make sure to allocate enough time to address all concerns and questions. We believe it’s very important for our patients to build a relationship with us and for them to be able to trust our team. Regardless of the type of treatment, we are acutely aware of the emotional roller coaster of infertility. As fertility nurses, we do our best to make the experience as smooth and pleasant as possible, and generally build a very close rapport with our patients.”

What is your favorite patient success story?

“My favorite patient success story would be a couple who came from China seeking fertility assistance. They already had two children of their own, but unfortunately, they were both born with a genetic disease and passed away at a young age. They wanted to have another child but didn’t want their future child to have a genetic disease as well, so they used an egg donor. By doing so, they had a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby.”

What is your favorite patient success story?

“One of my favorite patient stories is I had a patient who was in her mid-40’s who had her eggs frozen 15 years ago. She was ready to have children and had a sperm donor in mind, so she came to us to explore her options. We advised her to use a surrogate for a successful pregnancy, due to her health. A year later she had her first child, a girl. She is now expecting her 2nd child via surrogate.”

What is your position and how does it affect the patient experience?

“My role as an IVF nurse is to make sure that our patients get all the information they need to have a smooth and pleasant experience as they go through the emotional roller coaster of their fertility treatments, whether it is an insemination cycle, IVF, egg donor recipient cycle, or insemination. I am the patients’ liaison to Dr. Wilcox; I am their “go-to” person. I order their medications and inform them of their office visits. I let them know what to expect on their appointments with us, where it’s just for an ultrasound, or blood work, or their day of egg retrieval or transfer. I continue to strive to be the best as I can be as a nurse, so that I will be able to continue to serve our patients and make a difference in their lives.”

Why did you choose to work in the fertility field and what do you like best about your position?

“IVF Nursing is emotionally challenging but incredibly rewarding work. Our patients often arrive here emotionally exhausted and very vulnerable. They bring stories of infertility, miscarriage, grief, and loss, and nurses need to be very sensitive to that. The key to IVF nursing is relationship and trust. As we are handling their precious eggs and sperm, patients have to be able to trust us, and confidentiality is crucial. There is a surprisingly strong social stigma attached to infertility that can be very difficult for patients to deal with and we have to respect that. But it’s an incredibly exciting place to work.”
